Habibi is an Arabic word that literally means “my love” (sometimes also translated as “my dear,” “my darling,” or “beloved.”)
Fakroun's idea for connecting his Libyan folk music roots to the Europop and French rock, made his music eternally and universally loved.
And, since we talk about love, my eternal love, one fine morning, put on "Ya Blady", a slow tempo, dubby, guitar driven, vocal bliss Arabic song that blew my mind with its simple, yet deep character.
My love for the song made me buy this vinyl album for the birthday of my beloved, making the love circle complete.
But enough about love.
This is a vinyl full of small gems, unknown to a lot of Western people.
"Njoom Al Leyel", a wonderful mesmerising tune. "Awedny", a song to dance and get out the evil from your system. "Nisyan", the closest you can get to a Talking Heads made in Arabia.
Habibi's United. This one's for you.
